Today we practised speaking with our puppets. we asked "'Tu es français?' or 'Tu es française?' for a girl and replied 'Non, je suis écossais' or 'Non, je suis écossaise' for a girl.

We also learned different ways to say hello and goodbye at different times of day.

Today we only had a ahort time for french but we revised mon and ma and added mes.

Mon and ma

Today we looked over the homework we did on Ma Famille. We had to match 'mon' or 'ma' to the masculine or feminine members of the family. A girl cousin would be ma cousine and a boy cousin would be mon cousin.

We split into two groups and one group played on the computer and the other group played 'pairs' and then we swopped. The group on the computer had to match the members of the family onto the family tree and then in the next game you had to write the family names in french. We used typeit to type the accents and languages online for the games.

Our question this week is "Tu as des frères ou des soeurs? Comment s'appelle ton frère ou ta soeur?

Today we learned some more family words:

Le fils - the son
La fille - the daughter
l'oncle - the uncle
la tante - the aunt
le neveu - the nephew
la nièce - the niece
le cousin - the cousin (masculine)
la cousine - the cousin (feminine)

We tried to say my brother or my sister and match the mon with le and ma with la but it was quite hard to remember quickly.

We visited Inchinnan's blog and answered their question "Tu as des frères et des soeurs?' which means "Do you have brothers and sisters?" A few of us had to reply "Je suis enfant unique" - "I am an only child".

Today we learned to say some family words in french.

le père ~ the father
la mère ~ the mother
le grand-père ~ the grandfather
la grand-mère ~ the grandmother
le frère ~ the brother
la soeur ~ the sister

We have to remember to match the ending of grand(e) if the word is masculine or feminine.

We played a matching game on the whiteboard and a flashcard game where one of us said "Qui est-ce?" and the others had to guess the family member.

Try printing this page and write the family members we have learned so far in french.

Talking and Listening Assessment

Today we pretended to be a character and our partners asked us all about ourselves. Comment t'appelles-tu? Quel âge as-tu? Où habites-tu? Tu es français? You can see us in the photos. We also revised the numbers from 0-59 and played number games with Roller and Learning languages online.

We also posed some questions for Inchinnan. Look at the four photos. Jeanne, quel âge est-elle? Et Sylvie? Pierre, quel âge est-il? Et Henri? Can you write your replies in french in the comment box below? If you need any french accents get them from the typeit website.

Today we revised some of what we have learned so far. We practiced the weather by playing flashcard games and revised the time with games on the whiteboard.

Try listening to this and see if you can understand the rhyme at the end. Try downloading it to your MP3 player and practice listening and repeating what they are saying.

This week we learned the rest of the weather phrases - the ones that begin with “Il fait”. Il fait beau, il fait mauvais, il fait chaud, il fait froid and il fait gris. Some people took a flashcard out to the front of the class and hid it. They asked the class the question - "Quel temps fait-il?" and the rest of the class had to guess the answer.

We tried some of the weather games at learning languages online and liked Attrape les mots. Which one did you like best?

Today we began to learn to say the weather in French. We started with il pleut, il neige and il gèle then we went on to il y a du vent, il y a du soleil and il y a du brouillard. We tried to act out a few of them in the photos. Can you guess what they are and type your answers in french in the comments below?

Revision and assessment

This week we revised the calendar and telling the time. We went round in two circles and when the music stopped we asked the person beside us a question in french such as "Quelle est la date de ton anniversaire?" and the other person answered in french.

We then did two assessment sheets which will tell us what we have to practise next. We can practise more dates and times with Roller.

This week we learned to tell the digital time in french and we practised telling the time by playing the games at Languages online Let us know which games you liked best by leaving a comment below.

We also used the smartboard to match the time written in french with pictures of clock faces and then we had a game of battleships using hours and minutes for the co-ordinates. We had to speak the time and then rub out a space at the co-ordinates

Today we learned to answer the question "Quelle heure est-il?" We matched the written time cards with clock picture cards and tried a game of Concentration suggested by Inchinnan.

We learned the hours, half past, quarter past and quarter to.
Il est neuf heures. It is nine o'clock.
Il est une heure et demie. It is half past one.
Il est trois heures et quart. It is quarter past three.
Il est dix heures moins le quart. It is quarter to ten.

Remember if you know the day of the week you could reply for example:

Mon anniversaire, c'est mercredi 30 juillet.

If you don't know the day you should put in 'le' in front of the number, for example:

Mon anniversaire, c'est le 30 juillet.

You should post your comments by Wednesday 14th February and they will all be published later that day at the same time - so no copying! :)

This week we revised our numbers up to 59 and played Kim's game with classroom objects. We tried an assessment sheet where we had to draw what was in the schoolbag. The objects were written in french and we had to draw them. Everyone did well!

Joyeux Noël et Bonne Année!

We sang Vive le vent! to the tune of Jingle Bells today. We also made a french calendar by going to SCRAN. We chose our favourite pictures then clicked on 'create' to choose the calendar template. Then you could choose from lots of different languages to print the months for the calendar.

Les nombres de 21 ā 59

Today we learned 30, 40 and 50 - trente, quarante and cinquante. That means that we can count up to 59 because the numbers all follow a pattern.

We have to remember that 21, 31, 41 and 51 all have 'et' in them because the french say twenty and one, thirty and one etc. vingt-et-un, trente-et-un. But the other numbers are just said the same way in french and english. Twenty-two - vingt-deux, twenty-three - vingt-trois. ('et' in french means 'and' in English.)

We sat in two rows beside a partner and one row whispered a number along the row like chinese whispers. Then we had to draw the number on our partner's back. Then our neighbour had to say the number in french.

We listened to Inchinnan Primary's Podcast and thought they had done very well indeed.

We also used the smartboard for mental arithmetic. We had 20 seconds to answer with our partners. We are getting better at numbers!

We learned the french alphabet this week and practised at alphabetpage

We have to watch out for G and J. In french G sounds like jay and J sounds like ghee.

We sang the alphabet song to the tune of Twinkle twinkle little star which makes the alphabet easier to remember.

We asked each other our initials with the question Comment ça s'écrit? - How do you spell that? We reply Ca s'écrit...... It spells ......

Today we learned the numbers from 0 (zero) to 12 (douze). We sang songs with Roller and his mates and played lotto (that's what the french call bingo!) For homework we have a worksheet to practice our numbers. Say, Cover, Write and Check! We are going to think about some french sums for Inchinnan and they will give us some to do too.
